About Gadget Match

Why we made it.

Gadget Match was made by Socialudo to bring people together to think creatively about technology and the support it can offer in later life. Housing associations, care teams and community groups use it to raise awareness of the gadgets that help people stay independent at home.

It began as a physical card game, played face to face with a printed deck. This is the online version: a group can play together from their own devices, whether they are gathered in one room or joining from home, with nothing to print or carry and no physical deck to pass around.

Each round pairs a real-life scenario, drawn from the everyday challenges people can face as they get older, with a real assistive technology product that could help. A judge for the round picks the best match, and the conversation that follows is often where the real value sits: people comparing notes, recognising a challenge a relative has faced, or discovering a gadget they had never heard of.

"Board members and colleagues learned lots. Some even came across ideas for new items that could help relatives."

The six themes

Every card in the deck is tagged against one or more of six themes, so a session naturally ranges across the different ways technology can support someone:

Health
Independence
Mobility
Memory
Social
Sustainability
